What trees does sooty mould attack?
Anything sitting under an insect producing honeydew. Black soot-like film on leaves, branches, cars and patio furniture below the tree.
Outcome
Harmless in itself — it grows on the honeydew, not on the tree. It is a symptom. Treating the mould achieves nothing; find the aphids or scale above it.

Common under aphid-infested maple and linden in mid-summer.
