Present in Indiana and the reason for the pruning rule below. It's the single best argument against 'we'll just tidy the oak up in June'. In Indianapolis, in Indiana DNR's 2008 statewide i-Tree STRATUM sample inventory, silver maple was the most common street tree in Indianapolis at 14.0% of 119,036 inventoried street trees, followed by sugar maple 6.0%, hackberry 5.1%, apple 4.9% and white ash 4.9% — that ash share is a pre-EAB-collapse figure and is effectively gone since emerald ash borer was confirmed in Indiana on April 21, 2004. The big silver maples over the 1920s-50s streets are the recurring job: included bark, codominant leaders and brittle wood that sheds limbs in every wind event. A red oak showing symptoms is usually lost within a season.

Rapid wilting from the top down in summer, leaves dropping while still half green, often one side of the canopy first.
A red oak showing symptoms is usually lost within a season. The urgent job is protecting the oaks around it, because it moves underground through grafted roots.
Never prune an oak here between April and July — that's when the beetles carrying it are active and a fresh cut is an open invitation. Dormant-season pruning only.
