
Four injuries usually happen together: roots severed by trenching or footing excavation; soil compacted under repeated equipment, vehicle, and material-storage loads until roots can no longer take up water or air; grade raised or lowered, either burying roots too deep to breathe or stripping them off; and chemical injury from washed-out concrete, mortar, fuel, or paint dumped in the root zone. Nothing shows immediately because a tree runs on stored energy — the crown is being supplied from reserves for one or more seasons after the roots that would have replenished them are gone.
At the time of the damage: cut root ends showing in a trench wall, a scraped or re-graded surface inside the root area, ruts, a compacted pad where equipment or materials sat, or fresh fill spread over the roots. Later, and this is what most people actually notice: leaves smaller than usual, fall color arriving weeks early, dead twigs at the top and outer edges of the crown, sprouts erupting along the trunk, and a canopy thin enough to see sky through. The damaged side of the crown usually goes first, matching the side that was dug.
