Is an eastern white pine a good tree to plant in Indiana?
Eastern White Pine can work here, with caveats. Very widely planted as a fast privacy screen across central Indiana subdivisions and almost always on the wrong soil for it. It is also among the most road-salt-sensitive conifers there is, so any white pine within spray range of a salted road or the end of a drive browns on the road-facing side every single winter.
What you'd be signing up to clean up
Every autumn the interior third-year needles yellow and drop all at once in a heavy blanket of long needles, which is normal and panics homeowners annually. The real nuisance is pitch: resinous cones and sticky sap drip that will not come off vehicle paint easily, and a white pine over a parking pad generates more removal quotes than any disease does.
Where to keep it away from
Wide, shallow, and intolerant of wet feet — in compacted clay with a high water table the fine roots suffocate, and that is the actual mechanism behind white pine decline. It is no threat to foundations or sewer lines; the risk runs the other direction, where a new patio, drive, or a few inches of added fill over the root plate is what starts the death spiral.
