Are eastern white pine roots a problem for foundations or pipes?
Wide, shallow, and intolerant of wet feet — in compacted clay with a high water table the fine roots suffocate, and that is the actual mechanism behind white pine decline. It is no threat to foundations or sewer lines; the risk runs the other direction, where a new patio, drive, or a few inches of added fill over the root plate is what starts the death spiral.
Size drives root spread
50-80 ft tall by 20-40 ft wide is normal in central Indiana yards, and it stacks 2-3 ft of height a year when young. On good native ground it can go 200 years, but on Indiana clay 25-40 years is a realistic landscape run — so most reach removal size while still relatively young, which puts them in the upper cost bracket: tall, heavy, brittle, and usually planted right against the house they were meant to screen.
