Silver Maple in central Indiana

Silver maple is the most over-planted large tree in Indiana's street tree population — roughly 18% statewide and about 14% of Indianapolis street trees — because it was the default fast shade tree in subdivisions built from the 1950s through the 1970s. Those trees are now 50-70 years old and hitting the age where the codominant unions they grew fail, which is why silver maple lands on more central Indiana storm quotes than any other species.

What moves the price on this one

  • Height — a 20-footer is a few hundred, an 80-foot oak over a roof is four figures
  • Access — can a truck and chipper get to it, or is everything carried by hand
  • What's underneath — a clear yard versus a roof, a fence, a pool or a power drop
  • Condition — dead and brittle costs more than live, because it can't be climbed
  • Species and wood density — hickory and walnut rig slower than pine
