Red Maple in central Indiana
This was the default ash replacement, so central Indiana now has an enormous cohort of red maples and Freeman hybrids all planted between roughly 2005 and 2015 and all aging into their problems at the same time. The thing that blindsides homeowners is chlorosis — red maple wants acidic soil and much of this region's clay runs alkaline, so the yellow-leaf-green-vein call is a soil pH problem, not a disease.

- Height — a 20-footer is a few hundred, an 80-foot oak over a roof is four figures
- Access — can a truck and chipper get to it, or is everything carried by hand
- What's underneath — a clear yard versus a roof, a fence, a pool or a power drop
- Condition — dead and brittle costs more than live, because it can't be climbed
- Species and wood density — hickory and walnut rig slower than pine
