Chinkapin Oak in central Indiana

A white-oak-group tree that actually thrives in the high-pH, limestone-influenced clay under a lot of central Indiana, which makes it one of the few large oaks that stays healthy on stripped subdivision lots. It gets misidentified constantly because its leaves are coarsely toothed like a chestnut rather than lobed like an oak — and that ID is load-bearing, because white vs. red oak group determines how dangerous a summer pruning cut is.
