Callery pear is the tree that splits itself apart on schedule — every cultivar carries the same built-in defect, a whorl of near-vertical stems meeting at one point on the trunk with included bark in the unions, so failure is a question of when, not whether. It has also escaped into fencerows and old fields across central Indiana, so most quotes on one are half hazard removal and half invasive control.
