Answered for Zionsville, Boone County.
On April 28, 2016 the National Weather Service confirmed an EF-1 tornado with roughly 100 mph winds near Zionsville and Whitestown; it touched down east of Whitestown around 800 East and 300 South, badly damaged a large barn and scattered its debris, and tore up roofs on several homes in the Rock Bridge subdivision. The June 29, 2012 Ohio Valley derecho also swept across Indiana, snapping and uprooting trees and cutting power broadly. Eastern Redbud holds up better than most under it. Removing an eastern redbud around Zionsville runs roughly $100–$700, and in Austin Oaks, Brittany Chase and Rock Bridge of Zionsville access is usually what decides where in that range you land.
Zionsville has genuinely inherited canopy, not just planted stock: Austin Oaks, off Willow Road, was built on wooded lots, so mature native trees stand over the houses rather than replacing them, and the Village core's narrow streets carry mature oak and maple. Along the Eagle Creek corridor — including the 215-acre Carpenter Nature Preserve — the mix runs to oak, maple and sycamore, with standing dead ash still coming out; the town holds Tree City USA status and plants street trees annually.
Median construction year is about 1999 across roughly 12,000 housing units, nearly 84% of them detached single-family, with only about 5% predating 1950. The tree-relevant consequence is a large belt of 25-35 year old houses whose trees are hitting full size at once — big enough to reach roofs and service drops, old enough that original builder plantings are failing together.
Prune right after bloom in May, before the leaves fully expand — you can still read the structure, you are not cutting off next spring's flowers, and dormant cuts are awkward on a tree that branches this low and irregularly. The species-specific trap is sanitation: Botryosphaeria canker is redbud's worst problem, so every dieback cut has to land well below the sunken, cracked, discolored bark and into clean wood, and the saw gets disinfected between cuts or you spread it yourself.
No permit is required to remove a tree on private property in Zionsville. What is regulated is the right-of-way: prior approval from the town is required to plant a tree in a right-of-way encroachment, partly so the town can verify the spot clears utility and drainage lines. The Zionsville Tree Board, established at Section 31.25 of the town code, is advisory rather than a permitting body — it counsels the Town Council and Mayor on urban forestry, acts as liaison to subdivisions on street tree planting, and works to preserve Tree City USA designation (section text worth confirming against the live code).
