When should an american persimmon be pruned?
Dormant season, and train to a single leader early — persimmon naturally grows a crooked, irregular, often leaning trunk that is far easier to correct at 15 ft than at 40. The trap is assuming a cut solves it: persimmon sprouts vigorously from the stump and from lateral roots, so an untreated removal comes back as a thicket rather than a stump.
Reading american persimmon before you cut
The killer to rule out is persimmon wilt (Acremonium diospyri) — abrupt branch or whole-crown wilt with black streaking visible in the sapwood — though it is far more common in the Southeast than in Indiana. Here a persimmon going backward usually means fill dirt over the root flare or mower and trimmer damage to that thin blocky bark; stress reads as small leaves and light fruit set, dying reads as twigs that never break bud in May.
