When should a shingle oak be pruned?
Absolute no on pruning between April 15 and July 15 — red oak group trees can die within weeks of an infected wound, and root grafts then carry the fungus to neighboring oaks. Dormant season only; if storm damage forces a summer cut, seal it on the spot and plan to watch the tree through the following season before calling it safe.
Reading shingle oak before you cut
Oak wilt decline is fast and distinctive: leaves bronze from the tip and outer margin inward, then drop while still partly green, and a full crown can go bare in a matter of weeks. Slow, patchy thinning spread over several years is a completely different problem — usually compaction or root stress, and often treatable — so the speed of leaf loss is the diagnostic that separates stressed from dying.
