How does a shingle oak hold up in a storm?
The wood itself is strong and it is not prone to shattering. Its specific Indiana failure mode is ice loading on the marcescent leaves: a crown still full of dead foliage catches far more ice than a bare oak, and shingle oaks lose whole scaffold limbs in glaze events that leave neighboring bare-crowned oaks untouched.
What pruning can and can't prevent
Absolute no on pruning between April 15 and July 15 — red oak group trees can die within weeks of an infected wound, and root grafts then carry the fungus to neighboring oaks. Dormant season only; if storm damage forces a summer cut, seal it on the spot and plan to watch the tree through the following season before calling it safe.
