When should a northern red oak be pruned?
November through February only. Purdue's guidance is to avoid pruning, wounding or removing oaks from roughly March through August in oak wilt areas because sap beetles carrying the fungus are drawn to fresh cuts; if storm damage forces a growing-season cut, seal it immediately — this is the one situation where wound dressing on a tree is genuinely recommended.
Reading northern red oak before you cut
Red oaks don't fade the way white oaks do — a red oak infected with oak wilt in early summer can wilt, shed most of its leaves and be dead by fall or the following spring, with dark streaking in the sapwood beneath the bark. Slow decline is a different picture entirely: a thinning upper crown and undersized leaves, then two-lined chestnut borer and Armillaria root rot moving into a tree already weakened by drought, compaction or construction, typically finishing it over two or three seasons.
