How does a northern red oak hold up in a storm?
Oak is strong wood and a healthy red oak is one of the better ice performers in this climate — the ones that fail almost always have a specific reason, usually a decayed union, an old topping cut, or roots cut on one side by a driveway or utility trench. But the limbs are heavy and the tree is tall, so when a red oak does fail the damage is disproportionate, which is why it earns a real inspection rather than a look from the driveway.
What pruning can and can't prevent
November through February only. Purdue's guidance is to avoid pruning, wounding or removing oaks from roughly March through August in oak wilt areas because sap beetles carrying the fungus are drawn to fresh cuts; if storm damage forces a growing-season cut, seal it immediately — this is the one situation where wound dressing on a tree is genuinely recommended.
