What causes my whole yard is covered in branches after the storm?
Wind shear stripping out weakly attached and already-dead branches, plus ice loading in winter storms. Species that shed readily do most of the volume across central Indiana yards — silver maple, willow, Siberian elm and box elder are overrepresented in every pile.
What you'd see
Branches, split limbs, twigs and matted leaves strewn across the lawn, fence and beds, possibly a snapped top somewhere in the mix. The important observation is not on the ground: look up into the canopies the debris came out of, and trace any wire crossing the property before anyone starts dragging.
