There's a root wrapped around the base of my tree — what should I do?
The trunk enters the ground like a post or telephone pole, with no flare spreading out at the base. Often one side of the base is flat or slightly pinched inward instead of bulging out. Sometimes a root is visible crossing the trunk or disappearing into it. Above ground, one side of the canopy thins, carries smaller and paler leaves, or turns fall color weeks ahead of the rest of the tree. Overall growth slows and the tree looks older than others its age nearby. Maples and lindens are the usual subjects. A root is pressed against the trunk and compressing the conducting tissue between them. Sugars moving down and water moving up have to squeeze through a constriction that tightens every year as both root and trunk add diameter. The tree has no disease and no pest — it is strangling itself, and everything you would otherwise blame (poor fertility, drought stress, leaf scorch) is downstream of that. Because the constriction sits at the base, it also concentrates stress precisely where the tree can least afford a weak point.

Not urgent. Normally a hazardous tree removal job, $800–$5,000 around Indianapolis depending on size and access.
Can the tree be kept
Often, if caught before the root has flattened the stem. The procedure is root collar excavation — soil carefully removed from the base, usually with compressed air so remaining roots are not damaged — followed by cutting out the offending root. Practitioner guidance favors intervening while the girdling root is still small relative to the trunk and has not fused into it (specific diameter thresholds vary by source and are UNVERIFIED here). Once the root has grown into the stem, removing it takes a large share of the remaining live tissue with it and the cure can be worse than the condition; at that stage the honest recommendation is often to accept a shortened lifespan and plan a replacement. A tree already showing one-sided canopy decline has been girdled for a long time.
