Should I remove or save my pin oak?

Pin Oak isn't a habitual problem species, so a sound one is usually worth an opinion before it comes out. Pin oak was the go-to "oak that actually grows fast" in central Indiana subdivisions, and it is the one oak here that routinely disappoints — it is a bottomland tree that needs acidic soil, and a large share of central Indiana yards are alkaline clay sitting on stripped subsoil. The result is a chronically chlorotic, thin, slowly declining tree that produces repeat service calls rather than one clean removal.

How to tell which one you've got

Chlorosis comes first: interveinal yellowing on the newest leaves at the branch tips while the veins stay green, worsening each year until leaves go nearly white with scorched margins and twigs die back. The differential worth knowing is bacterial leaf scorch — it browns the leaf margins with a yellow band between dead and green tissue, hits a few limbs at a time and returns worse annually, and unlike pH-driven chlorosis it has no cure, so trees run 5-8 years to mortality.

The structural question

Pin oak wood is meaningfully stronger than maple or pear and whole-tree failure is uncommon; the characteristic Indiana ice failure is the downswept lower limbs, which are already loaded in the direction ice pushes them and snap or peel at the trunk. Chronically chlorotic pin oaks are the exception — years of dieback leave a scaffold of dead brittle interior branches, which is why a thin but otherwise sound-looking pin oak still drops wood in wind.
