Is my american basswood safe in a storm?
Urban ice-storm species lists put basswood and linden on the susceptible side — the wood is soft and light, so it loads with glaze and gives way rather than flexing. The characteristic Indiana failure is not a single big limb but a split at the base of a multi-stem clump, where included bark between codominant sprout stems tears the tree open at ground level.
What pruning can and can't prevent
Prune dormant, late winter, and keep the cuts small. The species-specific trap is its sprouting reflex — a hard reduction or a topping cut answers with a fountain of epicormic shoots along the limbs and a ring of basal suckers, and because the heartwood has essentially no decay resistance, every oversized cut becomes a decay column instead of closing cleanly.
