Are american basswood roots a problem for foundations or pipes?
Shallow and wide in central Indiana clay, staying in the top foot or two and surfacing in the lawn where mower and trimmer wounds open the thin root bark. The bigger practical issue is basal and root sprouting: mature basswood commonly stands as a clump of stems off one root plate, so a "one tree" removal is often three or four stems plus a sprout ring that regenerates unless the stump is treated.
Size drives root spread
Typically 70 to 80 feet tall at 2 to 3 feet in trunk diameter in Indiana conditions, with the crown reaching well past the drop zone on a normal subdivision lot. Stems stay structurally sound to roughly 120 years before decay losses climb sharply, and at that mature size a removal sits in the large-tree bracket — often crane or heavy-rigging work, and multi-stem clumps push it higher.
