Answered for Lawrence, Marion County.
About 1,700 acres of the former Fort Benjamin Harrison went to Indiana DNR as Fort Harrison State Park (sources differ on the exact acreage transferred), described as one of central Indiana's largest hardwood forests — oak, hickory, beech, walnut and maple, with a one-mile Tree ID Trail off Millennium Grove. Outside the park the picture inverts: a 2026 urban forestry assessment by IU McKinney Climate Fellow Taylor Stout found Lawrence has no tree inventory at all, that most surveyed trees are in good condition but overdue for pruning and re-mulching, and that southern Lawrence around Pendleton Pike and Post Road is the hottest and least-treed area. That context matters for osage orange: not native to indiana but planted across the state as living fence before barbed wire and again for erosion control in the 1930s, so nearly every one in central indiana is a hedgerow relic that a subdivision later grew around. Removing an osage orange around Lawrence runs roughly $250–$1,400, and in Oaklandon, Fort Ben and Indian Lake access is usually what decides where in that range you land.

Lawrence has three sharply separated tree-age cohorts: a village core platted in 1849 as Lanesville (renamed Lawrence in 1866) with 19th-century-scale trees, a suburban wave that took the population from 1,951 in 1950 to 16,353 in 1970 and left ranch-subdivision plantings now 55 to 70 years old and at end of life, and Fort Ben, where the military presence was phased out by October 1997 under a reuse plan developed between 1992 and 1997, so that housing and its trees date from the late 1990s onward.
Not native but naturalized and found throughout Indiana, planted historically for fence rows and fence posts — Purdue documents this history directly. In central Indiana it usually turns up as a surviving hedgerow line at the back of a property or along a former field boundary, which means shared-ownership and property-line questions come up more often than with other species.
Lawrence does not have a tree ordinance — creating one is among the things the city's in-progress urban forest master plan is looking at. There is no permit required to remove a tree on your own property. The code is also reported to carry Sec. 5-2-1-31, Tree Trimming Requirements Along Right-of-Way, obliging property owners to keep limbs over a street or sidewalk trimmed to a set clearance and letting the Street Commissioner do the work and bill the owner after a 15-day notice — but that section, including the clearance height, could not be verified from a retrievable copy of the code, so confirm it with the city.
