Is an eastern redbud common in central Indiana?
Native throughout Indiana and heavily planted, and it is one of the small natives the Indiana Native Plant Society names as a Callery pear replacement, so central Indiana now has a lot of redbuds of very similar age. The ones planted in full sun on hot, compacted, stripped subdivision clay are the ones showing canker earliest — site, not the species, is what separates a 30-year redbud from a 12-year one.
Why that matters for tree work
Redbud is the small tree everyone loves and nobody plans to remove — magenta flowers straight off bare wood in April, native to Indiana, and one of the standard native swaps being recommended for Callery pear. It ends up on a quote because it is short-lived and dies limb by limb: a 20-year-old redbud will be losing whole branches to canker while the rest of it still blooms beautifully.
