Is a kentucky coffeetree common in central Indiana?
An Indiana native and increasingly a deliberate planting choice around Indianapolis for street tree pits, parking lot islands and disturbed subdivision ground, largely as builders and municipalities move off Callery pear and rebuild the canopy lost to emerald ash borer. It stays uncommon in the wild here, so most specimens you will quote on are planted, not volunteer.
Why that matters for tree work
The number one coffeetree call in central Indiana comes in May, when the neighbors' maples are fully leafed out and this thing is still bare sticks — it is one of the last trees to leaf out and one of the first to drop, so healthy specimens get diagnosed as dead every spring. The second call is the pods, which is why the male cultivars exist.
