Are kentucky coffeetree roots a problem for foundations or pipes?
Deep and coarse, and unusually forgiving of exactly the ground central Indiana builders leave behind: compacted clay, stripped topsoil, high water table and periodic standing water, plus alkaline pH and road salt. The catch is that it spreads by root suckers, so a stump that is cut and left can throw shoots out into the lawn well beyond where the trunk stood.
Size drives root spread
Mature at roughly 60 to 80 feet tall with a 40 to 55 foot spread and an open, irregular crown. It is long-lived, with specimens routinely running past a century, so removals land in the full large-tree bracket — though the open crown and tough, non-shattering wood make rigging comparatively predictable, which can pull the quote below a same-size silver maple.
