Is a hawthorn common in central Indiana?
Multiple Crataegus species are Indiana natives and hawthorn is a classic central Indiana fencerow, roadside and old-field tree, often paired with eastern redcedar on limy ground; dotted hawthorn runs from south-central up through central and northern Indiana on glacial soils. The landscape standard, Winter King green hawthorn, was itself selected from a fence row near Vincennes, Indiana.
Why that matters for tree work
Hawthorn is the tree that changes the job plan rather than the risk assessment — thorns running an inch to several inches long mean full arm protection, hand protection and a slow, careful drag-out, so a 20-foot hawthorn realistically prices like a much larger tree. It is not a hazard species; it is a labor and PPE species.
