When should a hawthorn be pruned?
Prune in late winter dormancy and stay out of it in a warm wet spring, because like the rest of the rose family it is fire blight susceptible. The trap is purely physical: the thorns are on the interior branches you have to reach through and they will go through ordinary gloves, so interior thinning takes several times longer than the same work on a crabapple, and the base needs an annual pass because the root suckers come back thorny too.
Reading hawthorn before you cut
Cedar-hawthorn rust and cedar-quince rust hit it every wet spring in a state full of eastern redcedar — bright orange-yellow leaf spots, often with a black dot at the center, sometimes enough to defoliate a branch. That is an appearance problem and the tree lives; fire blight is what kills it, and you tell them apart by color and shape: orange spots mean alive, while black scorched shoot tips hooked into a shepherd's crook with dead leaves still clinging mean cut back hard into clean wood.
