Does Japanese beetles spread to other trees?

No. Japanese beetles doesn't move tree to tree in a way that makes your other trees a worry. Ugly, rarely fatal to an established tree. A mature linden can lose most of its leaves in July and be fine the following spring.

What to check

Leaves skeletonised to lace, worst at the top of the tree, through July.

Indiana specifics

Every July, reliably. Linden and crabapple get hit hardest here.
