Does an american sweetgum drop a lot of debris?
The gumballs: hard, spiked seed balls roughly an inch across, thousands per mature tree, dropping from late fall through winter and into spring, dulling mower blades, rolling underfoot on drives, and hurting bare feet. Leaf drop is heavy and late — sweetgum holds color and foliage well past its neighbors, so it is often the tree that forces a second cleanup after municipal leaf pickup has already ended.
How much tree is dropping it
Roughly 60 to 75 feet tall and 40 to 50 wide in the Midwest, and long-lived — often well past 150 years on a decent site, so you are removing it for conflict, not old age. That puts it squarely in the large-removal bracket, and because the wood is heavy and the crown is tall and upright, most mature sweetgum takedowns want a crane or a large bucket rather than climb-and-rig.
