Does a hawthorn drop a lot of debris?
Small red pomes ripen in fall and many cultivars — Winter King notably — hold them into winter until birds finally clean them out, with the drops staining a walk or drive. The genuine nuisance is thorn litter: shed thorny twigs sit invisible in the turf, puncture mower and wheelbarrow tires, and get thrown by a mower deck, which is a real reason people remove an otherwise fine tree.
How much tree is dropping it
Mature around 15 to 30 feet tall with a 15 to 25 foot spread, dense and low-branched from near the ground. It is long-lived for its size — old fencerow hawthorns in central Indiana routinely predate the subdivisions built around them — and removals fall in the small-tree bracket by dimension but should be quoted above it for thorn handling, protective gear and slow cleanup.
