The tree is not bending — it is coming out of the ground. What holds a tree upright is a plate of roots plus the weight of the soil sitting on them, and saturated soil both weighs less in shear and grips less. Once that plate begins to rotate the failure is progressive: every degree of lean moves the center of mass further out past the edge of the plate, which increases the overturning load, which moves it further still. That is a fundamentally different mechanism from a tree that has leaned toward light for thirty years, and it is the one that puts trees through roofs.
