Is my white oak safe in a storm?
White oak has the strongest wood here and mature trees ride out Indiana ice events that flatten maples on the same street. When they do fail it is not a snapped limb — it is a whole codominant stem in an old open-grown tree, or an outright uprooting in saturated clay after several inches of rain, because the enormous horizontal limb spread of an open-grown white oak carries ice weight a long way from the trunk.
What pruning can and can't prevent
White oak is in the white oak group and resists oak wilt better than red or pin oak, but Indiana guidance is still dormant season only — the disease weakens white oaks even when it does not kill them fast, and the sap beetle risk window runs spring into summer. The species trap is over-pruning: white oak compartmentalizes slowly and carries long horizontal limbs that look unbalanced to homeowners, and taking one off opens a wound it will not close, so reduce the end weight instead of removing the limb.
