Is an eastern hophornbeam (ironwood) common in central Indiana?
Native and frequent in central Indiana upland woods and fencerows, so most of the ones tree services touch predate the subdivision around them. It is rarely planted deliberately because it grows too slowly to be profitable in a nursery.
Why that matters for tree work
Nearly indestructible except for one thing: Morton rates it as not tolerant of salt, so anything within splash range of a salted road, drive, or cul-de-sac turnaround browns and thins while an identical tree 40 ft away looks perfect. It is also the most misidentified tree on any quote, because "ironwood" gets applied to both this and American hornbeam and the two routinely get billed as each other.
