Is a serviceberry common in central Indiana?
Several Amelanchier are native to Indiana and downy serviceberry turns up naturally along central Indiana woods edges, but nearly everything sold and planted here is Autumn Brilliance or another Apple serviceberry (A. x grandiflora), the hybrid group with the best disease resistance per Iowa State and Wisconsin extension. Expect to see it most in post-2010 landscaping rather than in older subdivisions.
Why that matters for tree work
Serviceberry is one of the default small trees going into central Indiana front yards now that builders and municipalities are moving off Callery pear, so the volume of calls is rising with the planting volume. Almost none of them are hazard calls — they are about orange-spotted leaves in June and purple berry stain on the drive.
