Is a serviceberry a good tree to plant in Indiana?
Serviceberry can work here, with caveats. Several Amelanchier are native to Indiana and downy serviceberry turns up naturally along central Indiana woods edges, but nearly everything sold and planted here is Autumn Brilliance or another Apple serviceberry (A. x grandiflora), the hybrid group with the best disease resistance per Iowa State and Wisconsin extension. Expect to see it most in post-2010 landscaping rather than in older subdivisions.
What you'd be signing up to clean up
Half-inch purple-black berries ripen in June and that is the whole complaint: birds take most of them, but what lands stains concrete, brick and car paint, and what nobody sweeps ferments on the walk. Outside that two-week window it is a low-litter tree — small leaves, fine twigs, nothing that needs a truck.
Where to keep it away from
Shallow and fibrous rather than aggressive, which is genuinely why it is one of the few small trees that behaves itself near a walk, a patio edge or a foundation planting on a tight subdivision lot. The thing to plan for is spread, not damage: it suckers and some species run rhizomes, so the clump widens over the years and the root zone quietly expands into the bed.
