Answered for Mooresville, Morgan County.
An F1 tornado hit Mooresville itself on April 19, 1996, injuring five people and causing $2M in damage. The September 20, 2002 F3 that struck Martinsville, about 12 miles south, injured 28 and did $15M in property damage. An EF2 touched down near the Martinsville Airport on March 31, 2023 ($7.52M). NWS Indianapolis logs 23 Morgan County tornadoes from 1950-2025, 47 total injuries and about $30.3M in property damage. Morgan County was also hit hard in the June 2008 floods, with Paragon roughly 90% underwater after about 10 inches of rain. Kentucky Coffeetree holds up better than most under it. Removing a kentucky coffeetree around Mooresville runs roughly $400–$1,900, and in Highland Meadows, Hadley Highlands and Rooker Run access is usually what decides where in that range you land.
The 1950s-60s core carries trees that are now 65-70 years old — full-size shade trees planted with the houses, well over the rooflines and into the primary conductors. Because the town's code contains no tree chapter and no approved-species list, plantings were never steered toward or away from any species, and ash is gone to emerald ash borer as everywhere in central Indiana.
Founded in 1824 by Samuel Moore, Mooresville's residential core is mid-century: the neighborhoods ringing downtown — Ray Youngs, Hadley Highlands, Highland Meadows, Brookmoore, Crestview Heights and Lake Hart — hold homes dating to roughly 1956-1969 by MLS averages. A 1990s infill wave followed (Rooker Trace, Rooker Run, Grandview), then newer sections at Bridgemor Village, East Moore Terrace, Lakeside Commons and Country View Estates; population was 9,411 at the 2020 census.
The number one coffeetree call in central Indiana comes in May, when the neighbors' maples are fully leafed out and this thing is still bare sticks — it is one of the last trees to leaf out and one of the first to drop, so healthy specimens get diagnosed as dead every spring. The second call is the pods, which is why the male cultivars exist.
Mooresville's codified ordinances contain no trees, shrubs or urban forestry chapter anywhere in the code — nothing comparable to Franklin's street tree permit scheme — and there is accordingly no permit requirement to remove a tree on private property. General nuisance provisions (Title IX, Chapter 91) and the Public Ways and Property chapter (Title XV, Chapter 151) are the only places a dangerous or obstructing tree would be reached.
