Is a black walnut common in central Indiana?
Extremely common in central-Indiana fencerows, back lots, and yards, most of it squirrel-planted rather than intentionally set. Indiana has held an external quarantine on walnut wood and hardwood firewood since 2011 over thousand cankers disease — the causal fungus and beetle have been detected in the state, but the disease has not been found killing standing Indiana walnut trees.
Why that matters for tree work
This is the most common removal request that has nothing to do with safety — it is about nuts, stains, and the plants that will not grow under it. Juglone in the roots, hulls, and buds kills or stunts tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, rhododendron, blueberry, and peony, and Purdue puts the typical toxic zone at 50 to 60 ft from a mature tree, with occasional injury out to 80 ft.
