Answered for Whitestown, Boone County.
Young, planted, and legally curated rather than inherited. Whitestown's UDO Approved Plant List leans heavily on oaks and maples — white, swamp white, bur, shingle, chinkapin, Shumard, northern red and pin oak alongside red, sugar, black and Freeman maple — with sycamore and London planetree for large-scale sites, so most removals here are storm damage, construction conflict and HOA-driven work rather than failing 70-year-old giants. Ash is explicitly off the planting list for emerald ash borer and Callery pear is on the town's own Prohibited Plant List. That context matters for silver maple: silver maple is the most over-planted large tree in indiana's street tree population — roughly 18% statewide and about 14% of indianapolis street trees — because it was the default fast shade tree in subdivisions built from the 1950s through the 1970s. Removing a silver maple around Whitestown runs roughly $400–$1,900, and in Anson, Walker Farms and The Neighborhoods at Anson access is usually what decides where in that range you land.

Almost the entire town is younger than a mortgage. Whitestown went from 471 residents in 2000 to 2,867 in 2010 to 10,178 in 2020 and roughly 15,767 by 2025 — the fastest-growing municipality in Indiana since 2010. Apart from the original 1851 railroad village core, essentially every house here was built after the late-2000s Anson annexation, so the trees over them are 5 to 20 years old and mostly still staked-era nursery stock.
Ice is the killer, because the architecture is long, horizontal, and end-weighted, so a quarter inch of glaze puts enormous bending moment on the union. Silver maple typically does not uproot — it splits vertically down a codominant stem or tears a whole scaffold limb out of the trunk, peeling a strip of bark with it, which is the exact failure that lands on roofs in central Indiana ice events.
No permit is required to remove a tree on private property in Whitestown, with one big exception that catches residents off guard: if your lot touches a recorded Tree Preservation Easement (T.P.E.) shown on the subdivision plat, the easement controls. Inside a T.P.E. you may remove invasive species, dead and fallen material, vines, and hazardous or at-risk trees and plant natives — but mowing, seeding, sodding, gardens, fire pits, sheds, fences, pools, tree houses and playground equipment are prohibited, all work must follow ANSI Z133.1 and A300 practice, and anyone who damages protected trees must replace them at minimum 3-inch caliper. UDO Chapter 5 governs landscaping for new development, and the Prohibited Plant List — which cannot satisfy any ordinance requirement — includes Callery pear, Norway maple, Amur maple, hedge maple, tree of heaven and Russian olive. Callery pear is a LOCAL Whitestown prohibition, not a state ban: 312 IAC 18-3-25 covers 44 species and Pyrus calleryana is not one of them.
