How big does an ohio buckeye get and how long does it live?
Typically 20 to 40 ft tall and about as wide in a yard, occasionally much larger on a river-bottom site, which puts most buckeye removals in the low-to-mid bracket — a climbing or bucket job, rarely a crane. It reaches sawtimber size in 60 to 80 years on a good site, but on dry compacted subdivision fill it stays shrubby and short-lived instead of ever becoming a shade tree.
Spread below ground too
Buckeye puts down a strong taproot in its first season, which is why established trees are difficult to transplant and why cutting one down without treating the stump often isn't the end of it. It is too small to be a sidewalk or driveway-lifting species, but it resents disturbance — trenching inside the drip line for a patio, irrigation line or downspout run reliably shows up as crown dieback the following spring.
