How big does a ginkgo get and how long does it live?
50 to 75 ft tall with a 50 to 60 ft spread at maturity, and it will outlive the house — ginkgos routinely pass 200 years and the species includes individuals over 1,000. Because growth is slow, most ginkgos on central Indiana lots are still a low-to-mid bracket removal; a fully mature one over a roof is a crane job.
Spread below ground too
Deep, coarse and unusually well behaved for a tree this size — ginkgo is one of the few large shade trees you can put in a five-foot tree lawn without budgeting for a lifted sidewalk, and it transplants easily because of it. The flip side is that a newly planted ginkgo looks like it is doing nothing for two or three years while it builds roots, and homeowners often kill them with over-watering or trimmer damage during that window.
