How big does a black tupelo (black gum) get and how long does it live?
30-50 ft tall by 20-30 ft wide with slow growth (Morton), so even a 40-year-old yard tree is only a mid-size removal with no crane needed. Longevity runs opposite to the growth rate — typical lifespans of 100-250 years with one documented individual at 679 — which makes a healthy tupelo a tree to preserve rather than cycle out.
Spread below ground too
It puts down a taproot early, which is why every source says spring planting only and why Morton flatly lists it as not transplanting well. In deep soil that taproot makes it unusually stable and keeps it clear of walks and sewer laterals; in shallow compacted clay over a perched water table the taproot never develops properly, which is much of why nursery-planted tupelos stall out around 15 ft.
