How big does a black maple get and how long does it live?
Matures at 60–80 ft with a 50–60 ft rounded crown and lives roughly 150–200 years in decent soil. Full-size specimens carry dense heavy wood across a wide spread, putting them in a high removal bracket, and the tight crown means considerably more rigging than the height alone would suggest.
Spread below ground too
Moderately shallow fibrous roots that surface through compacted clay lawns and can lift sidewalk panels, though nowhere near as aggressively as silver or Norway maple. The specific trap on nursery-planted specimens is girdling roots — check that the trunk flare is visible, because a black maple set too deep in clay will strangle itself somewhere around year fifteen.
