
Acorns are the event: about three-quarters of an inch, sweet, on a one-year cycle so there is some crop most years and a heavy mast every two to five, and they pull deer and turkeys onto the property. It also drops leathery leaves that break down slowly and mat on lawns, plus small dead interior twigs that are normal self-pruning rather than a warning sign.
Fifty to eighty feet tall with an open-grown spread that can approach 80-100 ft, and lifespans routinely 200-300 years or more. That spread is the cost driver — removal sits at the top of the bracket because of the reach, the weight of the wood, and the fact that nearly all of them are within striking distance of a house.
