NWS Indianapolis records 34 tornadoes in Shelby County from 1950-2025, with 12 injuries and $53.1M in property damage. The strongest was an F4 on April 25, 1961 — the city's own neighborhood study independently logs a major 1961 tornado causing over $1 million in damage. The costliest was the F3 of April 3, 1974, the Super Outbreak day, at $25M; an F3 and two F2s struck on March 10, 1986, and an F3 again on November 22, 1992. Earlier, a 1924 tornado damaged local factories and the West St. Methodist Church, and the flood of 1913 swept the city. Most recently, two EF1s touched down near Mt Auburn on May 21, 2022, and the June 29, 2023 derecho snapped and uprooted trees near Shelbyville.
