The samaras ripen in fall but hang on all winter and rain down through late winter and early spring, so the seed mess arrives in the months nobody has budgeted for cleanup — and then germinates in every mulch bed. Add continuous small deadwood year-round and, on female trees, the box elder bugs that follow the seed straight into the siding and window frames.
Typically 30-50 ft with a sprawling irregular crown, occasionally up to 75 ft, and short-lived — averaging around 60 years and rarely reaching 100. Removals are cheap relative to their size because the wood is soft and fast to cut, but multiple leaning stems over a structure add real rigging time, and the stump must be treated or the whole thing regrows.
