Do tree services charge by the hour or by the job?

Most tree removal jobs around Indianapolis land between $400 and $1,900, with the average near $720. The spread is that wide because height and access move the number more than anything else — a site that a truck can back up to and one where everything is carried by hand are the same tree and not the same job.

What actually moves the number

Height — a 20-footer is a few hundred, an 80-foot oak over a roof is four figures. Access — can a truck and chipper get to it, or is everything carried by hand. What's underneath — a clear yard versus a roof, a fence, a pool or a power drop. Condition — dead and brittle costs more than live, because it can't be climbed. Species and wood density — hickory and walnut rig slower than pine. Debris — haul-off, or leave the wood and chips on site.

Where the price genuinely comes down

Book off-season — winter is quieter and cheaper than the week after a storm. Keep the wood and the chips instead of paying for haul-off. Clear the access so the truck gets close. Bundle the stump into the same visit rather than booking it twice.

What doesn't save money

Hiring the crew without insurance, or the one that won't put the scope in writing. Both cost more later, and the second is how a $400 removal becomes $1,200 once the stump and the debris turn out not to have been included.
