Are northern catalpa roots a problem for foundations or pipes?
Catalpa roots are coarse and reasonably deep, and it simply is not a hardscape-conflict tree — you rarely find it lifting a drive or in a sewer lateral. What it does have is broad tolerance for central Indiana's worst conditions: alkaline clay, road salt, and both wet and dry sites, which is why so many survive untended in ditch banks, alleys, and old farm lots.
Size drives root spread
Roughly 40 to 60 feet tall and 20 to 40 wide, fast-growing, and short-lived for its size — commonly cited at around 50 years. So a catalpa often becomes a large-tree removal price on a tree that only stood for one generation, and the wide spreading crown over a fence, alley, or garage usually forces a rigging job rather than a straight drop.
