Are hackberry roots a problem for foundations or pipes?
One of the genuinely good root systems for a residential lot: hackberry roots deep, commonly reaching 10-20 ft on most sites, instead of running a shallow mat like the maples. That deep habit makes it markedly slower to lift sidewalks and driveway aprons than a red or Norway maple of the same size, which is the real argument for putting one in a narrow tree lawn between curb and walk.
Size drives root spread
About 40-60 ft tall with a 40-50 ft spread, and genuinely long-lived at roughly 150-200 years, well beyond most of what is planted around it. Removals land mid-bracket, and the cost driver is unusual for a tree this size: the wood is dense but it is the sheer brush volume from that twiggy wide crown that runs up chipping and hauling time.
